Aliens have introduced powerful alien weapons such as the Alien Blaster and Fire Lance to Earth and have possibly watched life be born and destroyed for millions of years, and in the tragic events that happened in 2077, they most likely watched the Earth burn and billions die.
There was no significant evidence of aliens in the previous games, and they remained a mystery that players enjoyed. When Fallout 3's DLC Mothership Zeta released many fans were outraged that Bethesda took away all the mystery of aliens and brought them forward.
 Fallout and Fallout 2
In the previous games aliens and alien weaponry appeared as a cameo, in Fallout an alien ship can be found with the powerful Alien Blaster. Aliens were not enemies in the previous ones and were usually found dead.
 Fallout 3
The first sight of Alien life form in Fallout 3 comes at the Alien Crash Site in the Capital Wasteland. A crashed Recon Craft Theta can be found directly north of MDPL-13 Power Station or west of the Greener Pastures Disposal Site. At the front of the ship you will find the body of a dead Alien next to an Alien Blaster and some Alien Power Cells.
When you add the DLC pack: Mothership Zeta, you will be brought back to the crash site by a transmission from the Recon Craft Theta Beacon. When you get close to the site you'll be surrounded by a blue light and teleported upon the Alien's Mothership where you'll get first contact with living Alien's.
All Aliens on board are hostile towards you and none of them speak english. Some Aliens are equipped with a glowing protective shield that makes them appear to be holographic, this makes them much harder to kill. The Alien's are usually equipped with either a Disintegrator, an Atomizer or a Shock Baton.
