For more information on events and how they are grouped and found, see the official random encounter overview page.

This is a list of all of all of the random encounters in Fallout 3.

[edit] Repeatable and Non-Repeatable

Main Article: Repeatable and Non-Repeatable

Random Encounters are put into two categories: repeatable and non-repeatable. Repeatable encounters can happen more than once in the game with a different set of random NPC's, and can occur in different spawning grounds, and are repeatable. Non-repeatable events only happen one time during a playthrough (may happen more than once if DLC is installed) and can also happen in any spawning zone.

[edit] Locations

While random encounters are in fact random and may happen anywhere, we will try to list possible locations or locations that people have witnessed the encounter the most. If the location section is blank or says random, it means it can happen anywhere like most encounters.

[edit] Random Encounter List

This list is grouped by influence, the characters you meet, or the type of event. There are no duplicates, so if a random event falls into two categories check both possible headings (i.e the Radscorpions Attacking Wastelander event could be classified under the Creatures and Wastelander section, but is put under the Wastelander one).

[edit] Karma-Influenced

Title Type Location Description Extra Info
Talon Merc. Hit-Men repeatable Anywhere on the map, usually when you fast travel or emerge from a metro station/tunnel. If your karma is above neutral (good, very good) Talon Company mercenaries will ambush you and attempt to kill you. The Private Contract note can be found on their bodies. Not to be confused with the band of Talon Company Mercs Mr. Burke sends after you.
Regulator Hit-Men repeatable Anywhere on the map, usually when you fast travel or emerge from a metro station/tunnel. If your karma is below neutral (evil, very evil) Regulators will ambush you and attempt to kill you. The Bounty Notice note can be found on their bodies.

[edit] Raiders

Title Type Location Description Extra Info
Going Camping non-repeatable random A man named Sam Warrick will be seen attacking an enemy. Once the enemy is killed he will become hostile and kill anyone near him, including you. He carries a Sniper Rifle and is fairly skilled with it.
The Human Bomb non-repeatable random Several Raiders will strap a bomb to a wastelander and she will engage you in dialogue. You have a couple of choices at this point, but which ever one you choose you'll still be ambushed by Raiders afterwords. The wastelander is usually a woman.
Locked and Unloaded non-repeatable random A man named Mel will demand items and caps from you. He is technically considered a raider even though people think of him as a "highway man", and his shotgun does not have any bullets in them, and if you attack him he is forced to use his fists.
Rifle Man non-repeatable random Laszlo Radford, a raider-esque man, attacks you with a Railway Rifle. He is Sam Warrack's enemy and this event only happens if you have a Railway Rifle Schematics on you.
Wastelanders vs. Raiders non-repeatable random 2-4 Wastelanders attacking 2-4 Raiders. The wastelanders are named "wastelander settlers" in-game.

[edit] Slavers and Slaves

Title Type Location Description Extra Info
Kill the Slaver repeatable random A group of Wastelanders ambush you and attack you, calling you "slaver scum". This happens if you enslave a lot of NPC's with the Mesmetron. The hit-squad was probably either related or befriended the people you enslaved.
A Little Competition repeatable random Four Slavers from Paradise Falls try to kill you because you're capturing too many slaves and making them look bad. Three or more captured slaves are needed for this random. Killing these slavers will not turn Paradise Falls hostile.
Escaped Slaves repeatable random Three slavers are found walking and looking for escaped slaves. They are non-hostile and will only become hostile if you shoot at them or ask them for 50 caps in exchange for information. Killing these slavers will not turn Paradise Falls hostile.
Slaver's Escort repeatable Random, but can be seen more in the Megaton/Springvale area. Three Slavers are escorting three Slaves to an unknown location, possibly Paradise Falls. You can disable the Slaves collars by having a high Science] skill or Explosives skill, but there's a chance you will fail and literally blow their heads up. Either way the slavers become hostile if this happens. You get good karma by saving the slaves and killing the slavers successfully.
Looking for the Temple of the Union repeatable random You find three Escaped Slaves around a fire or traveling. The player can give them the location of the Temple of the Union, the bastion of hope for escaped slaves, or lie to them and give them false directions Lying to them gives you bad karma, telling them the truth gives you good.

[edit] Hunters and Cannibals

Title Type Location Description Extra Info
Hunting Party repeatable random A small group of Hunters attacking a Wasteland creature, usually a Vicious Dog or Giant Ant. After the fight, if they manage to survive, they'll sell you the meat they took from the bodies. Oddly enough the random event creatures respond every three days but the hunters do not.
The Most Delicious Flesh of All non-repeatable random You can find cannibals hunting an innocent Wastelander. Killing these hunters result in good karma, and if you do you can't activate the next random encounter.
The Most Delicious Flesh of All 2 repeatable random You can find cannibals hunting, chasing, and shooting at an innocent Wastelander for his flesh. Killing them results in good karma. This is part two of the previous random event, and are the same hunters from the previous one. Meaning if you kill the hunters when you first encounter them you have no chance of getting this event. The first encounter is a non-repeatable one, but this one is repeatable.
Selling The Most Delicious Flesh of All non-repeatable random A couple of cannibals selling Strange Meat, they have no relation with the two previous events. Killing them results in good karma.

[edit] Wastelanders

Title Type Location Description Extra Info
Deathclaw Chase non-repeatable random A couple of random Wastelanders running away from a hurt Deathclaw (crippled in the legs, one or two) with the creature following. If you kill the deathclaw and save on of their lives they give you the location of Rock Creek Caverns. The location is actually given in a note.
Dying of Thirst non-repeatable random A Water Beggar named Ben Canning asks for water like all of the other water beggars (Micky, Carlos, ect.), but he will accept both Purified and Dirty Water. If you save him he will wander will the Caravan Merchants. He may die in the Wastes if the person he is traveling with dies.
Eyebot Spectators repeatable random Two Wastelanders tinkering with a floating Enclave Eyebot, having a discussion amongst themselves. They are not hostile.
Mauled by Mole Rats repeatable random A single Wastelander being attacked and bitten by Mole Rats. Killing them and saving the Wastelander will result in a reward, usually caps. Don't expect a large sum, the wastelander only gives you a small amount.
Ghoul Friends repeatable random A couple of wastelander Ghouls around a burning trash barrel to keep warm. They tell you that they're trying to get to Underworld for safety but can't pack it because of the Super Mutant presence. You can learn the location of Underworld on your map from them, but most players discover it early in the game. This contradicts Willow's (the guard of Underworld outside) statement on Super Mutants, on how they don't shoot at or capture Ghouls because they seen them as "one of their own". Although the wastelander ghouls could have fled from the Super Mutants before they shot at them.
Minefield Dismantling/Disarming non-repeatable random Two Wastelanders near a field of Frag Mines, one of them will unsuccessfully disarm the mine and kill himself and/or his friend. There is a town called Minefield of the same name.
More Than Just One Scrap non-repeatable random Two Wastelanders, one dead, and two dead Vicious Dogs close by. You can find the Wastlander Note on the dead Wastelander body and a key that can open an ammo box in Scrapyard. It is implied the Vicious Dogs killed the man.
Radscorpion Guarding Fridge non-repeatable random A couple of random Wastelanders trying to get water from a fridge, but it is guarded by a Giant Radscorpion. You can help them get the water or kill all of them and loot it for yourself. The Radscorpion is larger than normal, even for a Giant one.
Radscorpions Attacking Wastelander repeatable random A couple of Radscorpions attacking a Wastelander. The location is actually given in a note.
