Super Mutants are enemies in Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout Tactics, and the upcoming game Fallout: New Vegas. However, they are some friendly super mutants in the Wasteland like Fawkes. Super Mutants were ordinary humans that were exposed the FEV virus. They first originated in the Mariposa Military base on the west. In Fallout 3 the Enclave wanted to continue experiments so they told Vault-Tec to build Vault 87. The US originally conducted these experiments to gain an edge over the Chinese, but it failed.

When exposed to the virus, the human muscles start to expand, their skin thickens and hardens into a deep yellow and their intelligence decreases. It is impossible to tell the gender of a Super Mutant because when exposed to FEV they become sterile and loose their reproductive organs. The average Super Mutant can grow to around 10 feet, but Super Mutant Behemoths can reach around 20 feet in height.

Despite their lack of intelligence most Super Mutants travel and hunt in groups, they have been known to drag humans down to Vault 87 or the Mariposa Military Base and expose them to the virus to increase their numbers.

However, Super Mutants are smart enough to use weapons. Regular Super Mutants are known to carry Hunting Rifles, Nailboards and Frag Grenades.

Super Mutants are immune to radiation and most diseases, and because of certain cells in their body that can regenerate faster than a normal humans can, they cannot die of old age. In fact, the older the East Coast super mutants get the stronger they become. Meaning that Brutes and Behemoths are older than the standard Super Mutant.

[edit] Fallout and Fallout 2

A.K.A West Coast Super Mutants

Super Mutants on the West Coast were generally smarter than there East Coast counterparts. They were led by the Master, a mutated being. The Master is responsible for the creation Centaurs and other mutated beasts in the Wasteland.

Super Mutants in the west have longer fingers and toes than the east coast counterparts, and they have a more greenish tint to their skin. West Coast super mutants seem to have better armor as well.

Super Mutants from the west will be returning in Fallout: New Vegas.

[edit] Fallout 3

A.K.A East Coast Supermutants

East Coast supermutants aren't as smart as their west coast counterparts. They speak in short sentences and skip words, similar to a child.

The Super Mutants in the east came from Vault 87, and to make more mutants (super mutants are sterile) they would kidnap innocent Wastelanders and dip them in vats of FEV. The main reason there are so many Super Mutants in the DC area is that they are trying to find more FEV or "green stuff", because they have run out of FEV.
